Concrete driveways in Bartow for homes built before 1970
Bartow is an old town, and its houses show it. Of the single-family parcels that carry a build year in county records, about 65 percent date to before 1970, with a median near 1959. A driveway on a lot that old may be as old as the house. The Property Appraiser's largest neighborhood groups include Wind Meadows, Richland Manor, Maple Hill, Westover Park, Broadway East Stuart St and Washington Booker Park. Wherever you live, the first questions are the same: how old is the existing slab, and what is it sitting on?
The median single-family lot is about 0.21 acre, or 9,100 sq ft, which leaves room for a choice: a straight two-car slab, a wider apron for a boat, or a side strip for a camper. Start with our driveway service page, or see the Bartow page for the rest of our work in town.
Written permission before a driveway reaches the street
Bartow's city code, in Sec. 66-51, bars building a sidewalk or driveway within any street, avenue or thoroughfare without a prior written permit from the city manager, to lines, levels and specifications the city furnishes. You need that permit in hand before the first form goes in. Don't chase it afterward.
The rest of the job is murkier. The Building Department's own wording says a permit is needed before you construct, enlarge, alter, replace, repair or improve a building or structure, and it does not say outright whether a driveway on private ground counts. Don't guess. Development Services takes applications through its online portal, and walk-in help is available at City Hall. Inspections on permitted work must be requested the day before you need them.
If your address is outside the city, Polk County handles it instead, and the county has its own driveway rules. Our permit comparison guide lays the offices side by side.
